Whilst slowly, and meticulously building myself a much needed new computer (old PC AMD AthlonXP+ 2500 Barton/ 1GB PC2700/ BFG GeForce FX5600 Ultra 256MB/ Gigabyte GA-N7?? v2). While studying up on the new hardware I now have, I ran into an interesting Wiki. For those that don't want to click on the word Wiki (its a direct link to what I'm trying to tell you here 8^P ), just look at the pretty nerd image:

Birthday Blowout

So, yesterday was officially my nieces first birthday. I know that most of you probably don't care, but I know alot of you have children/nieces/nephews. I have only one niece and four nephews (my older brothers have all boys, and my youngest sister has her daughter), but since I am still a "newly appointed" Uncle, and because it really sounds weird to hear "Go see Uncle Adrian" or anything else said that attaches the title of Uncle to my name.

My point of this blurb is to show you guys this cool, kick ass cake my little sister made for her daughter's first birthday. Oh, and to show you how cute she is as well!

Girls don't have beards....but I do have hair!!  heh heh heh.... I got these suckers wrapped around my fingers. The world is MINE!!  Yeah, I called them suckers.... you're next! *heh heh heh*

Down With The Sickness?

The title of this blog post says it all....and no, I am not referencing the ever so bad ass song by Disturbed. I am speaking of myself being truly down with the sickness. The sickness you ask? Strep Throat.

*note: when I reference going to the doctor's, I mean hospital/ER.

It all started Sunday, December 30th, 2007. I had a friend over, and we were sitting around talking about games an what not. I lit up a smoke, set it down in the ash tray. Got up, gave my dog water, and listened to my friend complain about having a sore throat (as he picks up my smoke and takes a drag off of it). Not thinking anything of it, I continued to smoke the same cigarette I just lit (the one he took a drag off of).  Later that night, I started feeling this small energy drain.

Monday, December 31, 2007 I wake up feeling some what funky. Later that day, I notice my tonsils are feeling a tad bit swollen. No big deal, right? I go and gargle with some salt water, and go about my day. I ring in the New Year with all of my great friend's in Ventrilo and in game. Two hours later, I am starting to feel REALLY drained, and extremely cold. So I bid everyone good night, and go to bed.

Tuesday, January 01, 2008 I climb out of bed in the early afternoon....my throat hurting, and extremely cold. Can't remember what happened next.

I call in sick Wednesday morning at 6a.m. and go back to bed. I wake up a few hours later, play a few games and take a nap. Wake up, play some more, and feel more drained. Notice I have a fever. Take my temperature, and it reads 101 degrees.  I go to the Doctors. Get prescribed a medication (that I have never had prescribed for such illness) for Strep Throat. Start taking medication. Asked by my employer to please try to come to work Thursday. Fever breaks several times that night.

Wake up Thursday, soak and wet...and late for work. I have a fever AGAIN and take a shower/get ready for work. I show up to work at 11:40a.m. (40 min. late), sluggish, running a 102.7 fever. I work through the lunch rush (I am a cook in a restaurant, and the only cook aside from the owner), and ask to be sent home after he gets done shopping(for the restaurants needs list). While he shops, I have to pee. I use the bathroom, and low and behold I am urinating blood. I go home, pee more blood. Go to sleep. Wake up, play a little CS:S and go back to bed.

Friday night I call 911 for an ambulance ride to the hospital. I have a fever of 105.6, and need to have my prescription changed. Wait an hour in some E.R. room for a doctor...they take my temperature and realize something is wrong. I get put into an ice bath(SUPER COLD bath with some lukewarm water) for(or about) 2 hours to drop my temperature and keep it manageable.

I am still recovering...temperature hasn't spiked over 100 degrees today. But my tonsils are still swollen with puss pockets (spotted and clumped). I am just barely able to talk normally again, and hopefully will be back to work Tuesday. For those of you that have never had Strep Throat, or only heard about it, look at these images. Strep Throat makes eating/drinking VERY PAINFUL, if not impossible (I hadn't eaten food for almost 4 days....liquids sometimes came back up through my nasal passages and out my nose).

Christmas Trip 2007

So, at 4:30am Pacific Standard Time, I left Eastern Oregon heading for the Central Oregon Coast...... I got 7 miles out of Pendleton (that's where I live), when my car took a giant crap. I went to investigate, and somehow my muffler is hanging about 2-3 inches from the ground, the engine barely has any compression, and I have what sounds to be an exhaust leak. GREAT!! So, I am driving down Highway 84, back home..... at an expedient 10-15 miles per hour. This really pisses me off.

As I write this, I am at a friend's house waiting for him to gas his 83 Camaro up, make sure the lights an yadd-yadda work (yadda-yadda= vehicle fluids), so I can then drive it to the coast for Christmas. The catch is, I will probably need to fill the gas tank up 3-4 times round trip (between 120$-150$ USD).....not to mention that when I get back, I have to get my POS car fixed (if it doesn't accidently get pushed off of a cliff).

Thus far, my Christmas is sucking huge fruit cake....there had better be video games to play when I get to my Mom's house, or a certain someone will be super grouchy!

I will write more when I feel like it/get to the coast......

This really ought to be called the Christmas Misadventure 2007, but whatever.... yadda-yadda-yadda.

9/11 Attack: Where I was 6 years ago

9/11...a date that is as infamous as the attack on Pearl Harbor, way back in 1942. I remember where I was 6 years ago. My mom was in Germany visiting my Oma. She had been there a whole month, I was 18 and it was also the first time that I was 'allowed' to stay home while she was away. I was an unruly young 18....partied like no other. I remember staying up all night with my friend's drinking and chomping down on 'Trucker Energy'. We played the hell out of my Playstation...made a huge mess(it was a RAGING PARTY!!), and continued to drink all day long; September 10th. We drank all day and most of the night, eating 'Trucker Energy'...eventually I passed out. I awoke shortly after 6am. I had the news channel on....and my first sight of the day was an airplane slamming into the World Trade Center! I looked in disbelief, changed the channel to Fox News, and they were reporting the same thing. Then the phone rang. It was my Mom. She was stuck in Germany, due to the FCC order/Executive order that restricted flights from coming or going in AND out of the US. I was so happy that I got an extra 72 hours to clean the house....and so violated that we had been attacked.

I might write more on this later...I might just leave it unfinished. I haven't decided.

Metal Gear Solid Theme - Eminence Orchestra

OMG, I saw this in one of my press release emails. Since SPAWNPOINT.COM is dedicated to PC gaming, I didn't feel right adding this to the 'News' section of the website...since this is a console game. Check it out, it's a must for any enthusiast that truly enjoys a wonderful score, and how music can and will make or break a video game.

2Moons

I downloaded this game as soon as it was made available. I was reluctant, but seeing how the rating was 17+ (Mature), I had to check it out. I signed up for their free account, and I had to check out what names that were of a vulgar/hippie culture nature, and was amazed that certain names are not available...maybe with the right characters, but anyways. I spent 3 hours playing it, and when I get done posting this, I am gonna go play.

We are NUMBER ONE BABY!!!

I just read on SPAWNPOINT.COM about this game called Crazy Tao. I looked at the game's profile, gobbled up the information that was posted and proceeded to run a GOOGLE query on this game to see what and how many references I could find. My results:

SPAWNPOINT.COM : My Story

I first started playing on SPAWNPOINT.COM servers towards the end of July, 2006, and joined the forums August 18, 2006. About a month after joining the SPAWNPOINT.COM community, participating in the forums, and playing only on the 108.4 Assault Server, I was recruited by |PWND|Cooper (now known as <EC>Cooper), and spent about a month being a recruit....being set on fire, frozen, slapped, slayed, teleported, beaconed....you get the idea.
Then came November....I was approached by Labec to see if I would be interested in becoming a writer for SPAWNPOINT.COM - I wrote a few things (nothing with the phrase 'download pc games'), and that was that. Towards the end of November, I left the |PWND| clan for personal reasons, and flew solo for about a week or so. That's when my world got turned upside down.
Shortly after I left the |PWND| clan, I was asked if I would like to be a recruit for [PHXX]. There was no thinking about it. I just said yes (who the hell would say no?). I spent all of December and part of January as a recruit for them, and on January 10, 2007, I became the 'first born member' of the year. I was sooooo stoked!!!
From then on, it seems like I just keep moving up. From being invited to join the Anti-Cheat Team, becoming a member of Staff (with an email address!!!) AND the Admin Compliance team. Well, if it couldn't get any better, it did......I was sent an email, that, was full of praises for my hard work and dedication. Telling me that it was discussed between the 'Big Whigs' of SPAWNPOINT.COM, and that I was busting some butt, and they felt that a promotion was in order. That promotion title was: Content Director for SPAWNPOINT.COM .
I am so euphoric about this. I am still working hard looking to recruit new people for writing new and original stories and/or editorials....even people to help me post new downloads, add new games to the mega-long list of games that we already have listed. Its an adventure trying to make sure that I do my job well, and make sure that all of you within the community have new things to download, new stories to read, and new game information the moment it hits my inbox.
In closing, if you think that you would like to write, or help with game profiles, or anything else, send me an email at:
                adrian@spawnpoint.com
               Subject: How can I help?
If you shoot me an email with this information, I will get back to you ASAP!! Keep coming to SPAWNPOINT for ALL OF YOUR News, Downloads, Game Servers, and Community!!!!

DVD Backups

A proposed amendment to the current copy protection license governing DVDs would completely ban all DVD backups, and prevent DVD playback without the DVD disk being present inside the drive.

The proposed amendment was made public in a letter sent by Michael Malcolm, the chief executive of Kaleidescape, a DVD jukebox company which successfully defeated a suit by the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA) this past March. The proposed amendment is scheduled for a vote on Wednesday, according to Malcolm.

A spokesman for the CCA said he was not aware of the proposed amendment, but added that he could not comment until the CCA had finished its deliberations. A spokeswoman for Kaleidescape said she understood that a final decision could take weeks, if not months.

The amendment is currently being considered by the Content Protection Advisory Council (CPAC) of the DVD CCA. If enacted, it would become binding in 18 months from the date on which the CCA notified its licensees, which include DVD hardware and software manufacturers.

The terms of the amendment, formally referred to as the "Unknown Specification Amendment," are just a paragraph long, and would basically eliminate DVD copying of any form, whether for the purposes of fair use or not.

The amendment reads:

"6.4. Certain Requirements for DVD Products. DVD Products, alone or in combination with other DVD Products, shall not be designed to descramble scrambled CSS Data when the DVD Disc containing such CSS Data and associated CSS Keys is not physically present in the DVD Player or DVD Drive (as applicable), and a DVD Product shall not be designed to make or direct the making of a persistent copy of CSS Data that has been descrambled from such DVD Disc by such DVD Product."

The amendment was proposed by Chris Cookson of Warner Bros., Ben Carr of Walt Disney Studios, Jeffrey Lawrence of Intel, Gabe Beged-Dov of Hewlett-Packard, David Harshman of Toshiba, and Andy Parsons of Pioneer Electronics, according to Malcolm as well as the attached letter proposing the amendment, and signed by the legal counsel representing the signatories.

To Malcolm, the proposed amendment was designed to put Kaleidescape out of business, and represented an unfair monopoly that should be broken up. The letter was addressed to several members of the Federal Trade Commission, key members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, Department of Justice staffers, EU regulatory bodies, and the chief executives of the companies the amendment signatories are employed by, as well as industry executives like Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer.

"The real purpose of this proposed amendment is to put Kaleidescape out of business by excluding the Kaleidescape System from the DVD playback devices authored by the CSS License Agreement," Malcolm wrote. "You should be aware before you vote on the proposed amendment that you expose yourself, your employer and the DVD CCA to serious and substantial antitrust liability if you vote for this amendment. Both state and federal laws outlaw anticompetitive conduct by businesses joining together to put a competitor out of business."

The DVD CCA has previously tried twice to add "managed copy" provisions to its licensing agreement, and both times the vote has failed, according to reports. Managed copies would either transfer the CSS key to the recordable DVD, which would require an additional CSS "replicator" license, or else use what is called "pre-keyed" media, which would include the CSS key already as part of the disc structure.

The proposed amendment would apparently add hardware restrictions to prevent DVD data from being descrambled and then copied. To date, that provision has been effectively enforced by litigation, which has effectively prevented mainstream software companies from copying or "backing up" DVD movies. A number of independent software developers, however, have published utilities or other applications for "ripping" DVD movies.

The proposed amendment would also prohibit software manufacturers to create "virtual drives," running a DVD image from a hard drive. The previous Kaleidescape case touched upon the company's use of ripping a DVD to a large internal hard drive, and playing back the movie on demand without the need for a physical disk to be inserted into the drive.

In the previous ruling settling the Kaleidescape-DVD CCA dispute, Judge Leslie C. Nichols of the Santa Clara Superior Court merely stated that the company had met its obligations to the CCA under its license agreement, without addressing the broader issue of fair use.

Editor's Note: This story has been updated at 4:20 PM PDT with comments from both the DVD CCA as well as Kaleidescape.
